HEIC vs. JPEG: The Real Difference, and Which to Use

HEIC vs JPEG comes down to a tradeoff between efficiency and compatibility. Neither format is strictly "better" — they're optimized for different things, and which one you want depends on what you're doing with the photo next.

What's actually different

JPEG has been the standard photo format for three decades — nearly universal support, but a relatively old, less efficient compression method by modern standards. HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is newer, using compression techniques derived from HEVC video encoding, and typically produces a file about half the size of an equivalent-quality JPEG. The image quality at a given file size is generally better in HEIC — the format is doing more with less data.

Why the size difference exists

JPEG's compression approach is decades old and was designed for the storage and processing constraints of its time. HEIC's newer compression math handles gradients, texture, and color transitions more efficiently, which is where most of the file-size savings comes from. For a phone constantly capturing photos and syncing them to the cloud, that's a real, practical difference — less storage used, less bandwidth spent on backups.

Why compatibility is still the deciding factor for most people

Despite the efficiency advantage, JPEG remains the format that "just works" almost everywhere — every website, every piece of software, every device from the last twenty-five years. HEIC support has grown but isn't universal: plenty of Windows software, older web forms, and some apps still don't open it directly. That compatibility gap is the entire reason "why won't my photo open" is such a common HEIC complaint.

So which should you actually use?

  • Keep HEIC if you're staying on Apple devices — iPhone to iPhone, iPhone to Mac — and want the storage savings. Compatibility isn't an issue there.
  • Convert to JPEG the moment a photo needs to leave Apple's devices: emailing it to someone on Windows, uploading it to a site that rejects HEIC, or attaching it somewhere that shows a broken thumbnail instead of your photo.
